Highwood Wolf [1]

On a July evening in Kananaskis Country, after searching for grizzly bears, I finally photographed my first wild grey wolf. It trotted down Highway 40 with a calm, steady presence; a breathtaking reminder that wolves still roam the Rockies. Seeing one up close is rare, and a privilege I’ll never forget. Yet even as their population endures, wolves in Alberta face relentless pressure, from government policies that allow unrestricted levels of hunting and trapping, to a long history of persecution. This fleeting moment was more than a personal milestone; it was a glimpse of a species that continues to fight for its rightful place on the landscape.
